San Diego Comic-Con 2010

It’s no secret that San Diego’s Comic-Con International has gotten too big for it’s britches.  As Hollywood has stepped in and usurped the one-time comic book mecca, much of the spotlight has been stolen away from our beloved comics – but not all of it.  The convention just keeps getting bigger and has nearly outgrown San Diego itself.  With this much Con happening in one place it’s hard for the average guy to keep up with the news and announcements coming out of the Whale’s Vagina.

Fear not, we’ve got you covered.  With thanks to Comic Book Resources, Newsarama and the rest of the folks who actually wrote these articles, we’ve compiled a list of all the San Diego news that matters (at least to Ben and Josh).  If you’re someone who needs visual stimuli, there are some great pictures here and here, courtesy of the Godfather of Comics Fandom, Pat Loika.  Now on to the news…

Marvel Comics

As speculated, there will be some shakeups on Amazing Spider-Man as Dan Slott takes over as the lone writer of a now bi-monthly series.  Hear what the rest of the Spidey brain trust has to say here.

Kelly-Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios will explore the post-Dark Reign fate of Norman Osborn in the five-issue mini, “Osborn“.

Zeb Wells (Amazing Spider-Man, New Mutants) and Clayton Crain (X-Force) will bring back Carnage in an upcoming mini-series.

Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness will be leaving Hulk in September to be followed by Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman (Atlas)

Strange Tales will be back for a second volume featuring popular Marvel characters written and drawn by renowned indie creators including Dean Haspiel, Dash Shaw, Jeff Lemire and the late, great Harvey Pekar

The upcoming Ultimate Thor by Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco will be available day-and-date in digital format.

DC Comics

DC, WB Games, and Sony Entertainment Online have released a five-minute trailer for its hotly anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game DC Universe Online.

Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani (Tiny Titans) have been tapped to write Young Justice with art by Mike Norton (Green Arrow/BlackCanary). Young Justice, starring Aqualad, Superboy, Robin, Kid Flash, Miss Martian and Artemis is based on the upcoming animated series.

A second ongoing Flash title called Flash: Speed Force is planned to feature the greater Flash family

Fables #100 will be 100 pages and feature a Fables gameboard on its cover

Grant Morrison announced plans for Multiversity a series of books set in DC’s Multiverse

Ex Machina will wrap up with Issue #50 – 48 pages, no ads

Gail Simone announce plans for an upcoming Secret Six/ Birds of Prey crossover.

Other Comics

JH Williams III, The Walking Dead and Chew were among the 2010 Eisner Award Winners.

Aspen Comics announced a number of new books including a Fathom story revolving around the BP oil spill.

Boom! Studios announced a new partnership with Stan Lee‘s POW! Entertainment to launch a new line of heroes for Boom!

Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) will launch a new imprint called Skybound under the Image Comics banner to feature up-and-coming creators.

Movies & TV

DC continued to build hype for the upcoming Green Lantern film by putting the preserved corps of Hal Jordan’s predecessor, Abin Sur on display for all to see.

Though no official announcement was made, Geoff Johns unveiled live action test footage from a proposed Blue Beetle TV series with Jaime Reyes wearing the costume.

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold will appear in an upcoming Johns-penned episode of Smallville.

DC announced a DVD collection of their direct-to-DVD animated shorts including the previously-released Jonah Hex and Spectre shorts along with upcoming Green Arrow and Superman/Shazam! features

Marvel announced 4 anime series to air on G4Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men and Blade.

Brian Michael Bendis will write and co-produce an upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.

With much fanfare, Marvel unveiled a, Infinity Gauntlet movie prop.

NBC gave fans a look at their new superhero-themed show, The Cape.

Mark Ruffalo will replace Ed Norton as Bruce Banner in the upcoming Avengers movie.

Fans got their first look at DC’s direct-to-DVD, Batman: Under the Red Hood as well as Marvel’s upcoming Avengers animated series
