Weekly Hit (and Miss) List: 10/6/2011

by Ben Peirce

The Weekly Hit (and Miss) List is a rundown of the best and worst things I read this week regardless of their original publication date. It doesn’t have to be new – just new to me.

Checking in a little late this week, but not because I was particularly busy or even lazy.  I just plain forgot.   But that just means I have a few extra days worth of comics to choose from.  Let’s get to it…

THE HITS

Criminal: The Last of the Innocent #1-4 | Icon | Ed Brubaker (w), Sean Phillips (a) w/ Val Staples & Dave Stewart (c)

If you’ve read any of the previous installments of Ed Brubaker’s crime noir series, Criminal, then you know that the man has a gift for this type of story.  Each Criminal mini series offers up a self-contained tale from the underbelly of society, which intermingle and tie loosely together to form a larger continuity.  What makes Last of the Innocent special is that series artist, Sean Phillips and world-class colorists, Val Staples and Dave Stewart get to stretch their artistic legs through a series of flashbacks done in a faux-Archie Comics style.  It brings some levity and punctuates the backstory of Riley Richards, a small-time crook plotting to kill his millionaire heiress wife.  It’s 4 issues (compared to 6, in previous volumes) and the pacing is perfect.  Nothing is wasted and the tension remains high for every panel of this captivating tale of reprehensible people who you just can’t help rooting for. BUY IT

Weekly Hit (and Miss) List: 9/26/2011

by Ben Peirce

The Weekly Hit (and Miss) List is a rundown of the best and worst things I read this week regardless of their original publication date. It doesn’t have to be new – just new to me.

2 and 2 this week and while I’d planned to spotlight 3 leading women of the New 52, I decided to throw in a Marvel #1 to balance things out.

THE HITS

Batwoman #1 | DC | J.H. Williams III (w/a) & W. Haden Blackman (w)

It should come as no surprise that this book made the hit list. I’ve only been eagerly awaiting it’s arrival since oh … April of 2010. We spoke with J.H. Williams III when this series was announced over a year ago but since then we got only a #0 issue before the book was shelved (presumably in preparation for the DC relaunch).  Well, I’m here to tell you today that it was worth the wait! Fans of Kate Kane’s adventures in Detective Comics will be very pleased to see her story pick up right where it left off and Williams’ art is an absolute thing of beauty. Bendis gives his own “Best of ’08”

bmb1Arguably the most powerful writer in comics today, Brian Michael Bendis did a JinxWorld post and updated his Myspace yesterday with his recap of his 2008. There’s not much newsworthy here, but I thought it was kinda cool. Here it is below in original form:

“As we come to an end of another broadcast year here at jinxworld,I find myself very happy about a great many things…

As some know, my wife and I travelled all the way to Adis Ababa to get our daughter Sabrina, followed by her incredible year here in America.

Secret Invasion 8 Delayed Two Weeks

Ohhhhhhhhh, we knew we couldn’t have a ‘major event’ without at least one delay, right?

Marvel announced Tuesday that the final issue of Bendis’ Secret Invasion will be delayed by two weeks with #8 shipping on December 3rd. The reason?

“The additional pages in #8 did both Leinil and the schedule in,” explained Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Anybody who pored over the artwork from #7 a week ago can easily see how he and Mark Morales have been putting their all (and then some) into every page and every panel, and that effort has finally caught up with us. Hopefully, retailers and fans will forgive us these extra two weeks as we make sure that everything is in the shape it should be in for the extra-sized climax—and from there, it’ll be smooth sailing straight into DARK REIGN.”

That also means some other related tie-ins will have to be delayed as well:

– SECRET INVASION: FRONT LINE #5  – On-Sale 12/3

– SECRET INVASION: DARK REIGN – On-Sale 12/10

– INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #8 – On-Sale 12/17

– MIGHTY AVENGERS #20 -On-Sale 12/17

– SECRET INVASION: REQUIEM – On-Sale 12/17
